This of course all does depend on the reception to the first movie in theatres and DVD sales so we think that maybe Warner Brothers are getting ahead of themselves. Studio bosses have already won a temporary ban on RealNetworks peddling the product, but now the final decision is to be made at a hearing with the same judge that closed down the granddaddy of file-sharing sites - Napster in 2000.

RealNetworks argue that the copies cannot be distributed illegally and are provided for backup and convenience only, however studios are concerned that the software will encourage a rent-rip-return culture and impact heavily the $20 billion annual DVD market.

Interestingly, studios have also started developing and marketing competitor products to RealDVD which many have criticized as undermining the studios own allegations against RealDVD and the whole point of the court case.

They insist that the movie will be going ahead, but with recent cutbacks in the movie industry because of falling sales, the huge $160 million budget movie is in trouble. So until producers can find cheaper ways of making the movie, we’ll have to wait.

With director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Carribean) attached to the project, we can expect something special, but with no video game movie every making $160 back for the studio (Tomb Raider came close though), Universal’s concerns are understandable.

No official press has been released, but a recent trademark filing for the brand was made to cover both a television series and film of the franchise which reads: “entertainment services in the nature of an on-going television program,” and “motion picture films about a post-nuclear apocalyptic world.”

Movies of video games are quite common now, but a TV show of the game? Now that would be something new. Not necessarily essential viewing, but new.
